I could be sleeping

But I'm not sure how. I was almost asleep once, but then Leah came into our room whimpering that she had to go to the bathroom. I was so close! Now I'm dueling being tired with being itchy (there's another one right now) and having an active mind. Oh yeah, and someone keeps kicking me around.

The fact that I'm married to a nighttime lumberjack shouldn't be an issue anymore, but it doesn't help the current situation. He's sawed enough logs to build us a lodge in Yellowstone. How does someone snore while lying on their stomach? I thought that was a back thing. (No offense, Chad.)

My next desperate act is to take 1/2 a unisom and hope to slip into unconsciousness. That will make it harder to get up in the morning, but so does staying awake until 3 AM (since I know that from past experience).

At least the weather has finally cooled. My sweat glands are getting a rest. So are my olfactories since I don't have to smell myself quite so much. Now I'm finally comfortable, but the rest of the family is cold. Yesterday morning, the kids were wearing jackets to breakfast. Crazy.

I've been trying to clean the house up (seems I'm always doing this), but have been thwarted by an unseen force of laziness. I just don't want to do anything. Of course, the knowledge that if I do clean the kids will hide it under a fresh coat of clutter has me completely unmotivated. I mostly try to stay caught up enough to make it look nice for visiting teachers or some other visitors with limited notice. If anyone comes by and wants to venture past the living room, we're all in for some heavy embarrassment.

We've decided that it's time to get rid of the kittens. It's been a hard decision because they are so sweet and well-behaved. But we just feel a little silly paying $80/month for Daniel's allergy medicine and not even get rid of the problem. Unfortunately, we live in the country and are not the only ones with kittens to adopt out. I know I could "drop them off" somewhere, but it just doesn't seem responsible. I can take them to the shelter for a $15/kitty fee. It may come down to that.

I have a "due date" for the delivery of this ever growing baby. I like to think of it as an eviction date: 13 November. That's on a Tuesday. I'm not superstitious, but I still don't love the 13th. I don't have much choice, unless nature finally decides to take a part in this process. So now I can count weeks. That's 9 weeks from today, one week "early" if counting gestationally. This baby will be over 8 lbs. Luckily, I've not gained as much this time. It must be all the tomatoes this summer. Or the fact that I'm too lazy to get up and forage for food.

And now it's 12:30 AM. I'm supposed to be helping out in Nathan's classroom less than 8 hours from now. I guess it's time for that unisom. That or a big swig of Benadryl and a wack on the head!

Epilogue (the next morning):
I thought I was going to bed, but heard tiny meowing out in the backyard. I found that DARN momma cat with MORE KITTENS!!!! So at 1 AM I was running through my backyard in my pj's hunting kittens. I caught one then and put it in a little carrrier in the garage. I caught the other one this morning. I think she only had two this time. I'm going to use them for bait to catch that stupid cat and get her out of my backyard. This is the 3rd time in less than 15 months that she's used us for a maternity ward. That is one desirable female feline! I'm calling the shelter later today. I refuse to pay any $$ to get rid of this one. I'd still like to give the neighbors that abandoned her a large piece of my mind. That and their kids have been back recently, causing additional menacing problems.

SO AMERICA: SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS!!!

Anyway, I got about 4 hours of sleep last night. It wasn't solid and it wasn't restful = a nap for sure this afternoon. No one call me between noon and 3 PM.

To Post or Not to Post

That has been the question for the past week. I am finally sitting down and putting myself to work. Where has the week gone? I know that I have been keeping busy, but I'm not sure HOW.

A big event in our family was Rebekah's 2nd birthday. She wasn't exactly sure what was going on, but the rest of us were! I made her birthday cake the night before while I waited for Chad to return from a day trip to CA. I had a couple of ideas for her cake, but my ideas are always more spectacular in my head than in reality. So I scrapped those and ended up with a big pink ball. I edited and manipulated some bear parts on the computer and ended up with this.
Rebekah had an amused look on her face as I brought the cake over. I captured it the best I could.
The kids of course, were very excited about the presents and got involved right from the start.

I remember when the boys turned 2. Within the same week, they went from sweet little boys to tantrum-throwing terrors! I always thought that was so bizarre. Our girls are different. They are ahead of the learning curves and start the tantrums early. So now Rebekah's fits are at least legal. Let's hope that her tantrums don't last as long as Leah's (we're still dealing with them).

This weekend, we divided the family. Chad took the older three kids to his side of the family for some work and fun. I took Rebekah with me to visit my side of the family. The kids got to ride in Pamela's naked car (Leah call convertibles cars that are a little naked because they don't have tops on) and swing on the rope swing with their cousins in Grandma and Grandpa's back 40.

My mom watched Rebekah for over 5 hours so I could spend some time working in the library doing research on my dad's Swedish ancestors. I made quite a few discoveries, so the time was well spent. Thanks for the baby-sitting, Mom!

Chad met up with us on Saturday afternoon. We drove home on Monday, stopping to buy some peaches along the way. It took us about 5 hours to drive home. It usually only takes 3. We were driving 2 vehicles, so the fighting was lessened.

So yesterday morning, Chad and I put up some peaches. It was our first time doing peaches. We're learning each thing slowly. It's amazing that I did any canning. I only feel like resting lately. I still haven't completely cleaned up the kitchen from that activity.

Yesterday afternoon, we headed to the State Fair. The kids were all very excited about going. We saw lots of stuff, ate some very expensive food for dinner, visited a few (hundred) animals and wished that we could ride way more rides than was permitted. One woman made an effort to compliment our genes. She said our kids were so good looking that we should have a dozen of them. I replied that if they were as well behaved as they are good looking, there would be a better chance of that happening. It was a nice compliment, but I think she was just buttering us up so we'd buy some of her amazing lint rollers. (It didn't work.) Here's a video of some of our "fair fun" and some pictures.

We've been moderately successful with our garden this year. We've brought in an armful of zucchini, bunches of carrots and multiple bowls of tomatoes. The cherry tomatoes have been SO yummy that I've been eating them by the handful. This baby will either really Love tomatoes, or be allergic to them! Nathan is our most excited gardener. He has been giving us progress reports on the zucchini. Just today he told Chad that there was one that wasn't quite ready, but probably would be in about an hour! He's also keeping track of our carrots. He found this one with "two legs" the other day and ate it this afternoon.

Bad hair

Rebekah had a little bun on the top of her hair for church today. This is what she was left with when we took it out. It's one of those things that you really need to see in person to fully appreciate, but maybe you can get an idea from these pics. So funny.

Not so funny...Leah let out an ear-piercing scream in the middle of sacrament mtg today. Poor youth speaker. I'm sure no one heard 2 or 3 of her words during that moment. Some may have been temporarily deaf while their hearing slowly returned. I made a quick exit with the ear-splitter until she could calm down. Now people won't be thinking she's such an angel!

There's no excuse!

Chad and I took the girls out to run errands yesterday morning and were watching the clock the whole time in order to make it back for Nathan's bus. Had we known the future, we would have saved our energy!

Here's the story:

School lets out at 11 am. We expect him to be dropped off about 20 minutes after that. I have been going out to the corner to wait and walk him home. I've been expecting that this would not be a permanent arrangement. (There are things I can be doing instead of standing on the street corner!)

Yesterday, I was under a pile of yarn that I was about to roll into a ball, so I thought Nathan could walk himself in. By 11:30, still no Nathan. I finished my ball and got up to call a friend. Her kindergartner hadn't arrived yet either. OK then, something must have slowed the bus down.

I called the school. The bus left on time and there haven't been any reports of problems. I called another mother. Now it's 11:40. Her kindergartner has been home for 20 minutes. What?? Within 3 consecutive stops, only the middle student made it home?

In between my calls back and forth with the school and moms, I've been calling the "Bus Barn." I made 4 calls and got the answering machine 4 times. I finally left a message. But there still was the problem of the missing children. I called the school back and pestered them for a cell phone number of the guy at the bus barn. He went out and got on the radio.

The bus driver was a sub. (Excuse? Maybe, but a weak one.) I could hear a lot of the conversation. He thought he'd dropped them off. (REALLY??? WHERE???) Now I'm picturing Nathan wandering around some strange neighborhood. I'm hoping that the two of them are wandering together, at least!

More overheard conversation. He's still got them on the bus. Huh??? He's now PICKING UP kids. By this time, PM kindergarten has started (it starts at 11:45) so maybe these are preschool kids. He didn't notice that he still had some old riders when he started getting new ones? Nathan and his little friend are very quiet and likely would not have said anything. They might not have even been visible back there in the seats. (Excuse? Possibly, but still weak.) I wouldn't have been surprised if they got off at the school again and wondered what was going on.

I'm now asking where I can meet the bus to retrieve these children. Since it's currently on the other side of town at a place I've never heard of, I'm not real sure of meeting it there. Maybe at the school? They tell me to come to the Bus Barn and they'll be there.

When I arrived, some lady was waiting with them. She immediately began making excuses. (Something about a kid with a bloody nose.) There were no apologies. In my opinion, if you can't handle a little bloody nose and still deliver a bus load of children safely, you're moonlighting in the WRONG job. What if something more serious were to happen?

I loaded Nathan and his friend into the van at 12:10...70 minutes after school was released. When I questioned them, they both said that the bus didn't stop at their stops. So I counseled them to stand up and yell at the driver if that ever happened again. Poor, confused 5-year-olds. We are always telling them to be polite to grown-ups and now I'm telling them to yell at them. I wish I could !

I'll be standing at the corner, for sure, this morning. If that bus doesn't stop, lots of people will hear me yelling!

What we're up to

We've now been through a whole week of school. Nathan's Back to School night was last night. Daniel's school does Muffins with Mom and Donuts with Dad on a couple of Friday mornings at the beginning of the year. This Friday is Muffins. Darn. I wish I was a Dad. I like donuts better!

I started helping in Nathan's classroom today. Every Wednesday until November. Just in time for the baby to be born. Today I supervised the kids gluing colored squares onto a picture of an elephant. What would that teacher do without me?

As you can see, I've done a few more scrapbook pages. These were from today and yesterday. I run in spurts. Tomorrow I may spurt into my sewing room. There's lots to do in there! Speaking of which, I was helping Nathan fill out a spotlight paper and for the line, "My mom works at___________," Nathan answered, "in her sewing room." For the record, I do work in other rooms of the house, too!

Our bishopric was changed this past Sunday. Chad was Exec. Sec., but is now a free agent. We're checking the caller ID every time the phone rings. Actually, we already do that, but now we're a little on edge about it. Chad is too good a man to stay under the radar for long.

I get to teach this Sunday. Notice I phrased that positively. It's from Pres. Hinkley Priesthood Session talk, "I Am Clean." This is my 3rd lesson and second one from the Priesthood Session. I felt guilty for not recognizing the talk until I realized that I didn't attend that session! I am currently trying to decide how much to say and how to say it. The talk isn't long, but the message could be and there are some points that have the possibility of offending (like the fact that flip-flops and/or denim skirts really aren't the best church attire) if not handled just right. I guess I'll just rely on the Spirit and trust in the results.

The weather has really cooled this past week or so. I went from melting to cold toes during naptime. However, I refuse to wear socks in August. We didn't even reach 70 degrees today. I am actually very grateful that we never broke 100. Very close, but not quite. Somehow, I can still work up a sweat during the day. I should lounge around more! Maybe I should do more scrapbook pages. ;)

I wanted to take a picture last week, but don't usually have my camera while I drive around town. So you'll just have to visualize. Our little town got it's 2nd traffic light last week. It's fully functioning and even has turn arrows! Of course, they are usually just blinking yellow. It's still a small town. The light didn't actually increase the traffic. I'll bet the bus drivers appreciate it though. It makes crossing the busiest street in town a little easier. (Busy means you might have to wait for up to ten cars in a row to pass before you can go.) My favorite part about it all is that they reconstructed the train track crossing there. No more muddled brains as you are jolted over the tracks!

Leah told me today that her owies make her blood wiggle. Then she showed me a wiggle (in case I was unclear?). Too bad you missed that one! She also informed me that she has owies all over her body. I believe it because she is howling constantly.

Report of the First Day

Nathan had no trouble getting on the right bus this morning. There were some teachers there to help him. Daniel almost had some trouble as those teachers tried to put him on the Kindergarten bus, too! Daniel told me this right after he said, "I feel taller." Apparently, not tall enough.

Daniel got to sit right next to his favorite friend from last year. He knew this friend would be in his class and was hoping to be so lucky.

Nathan reported something about someone (an adult I think) "finding" (?) gingerbread cookies in the school. He only got one. This is a story I'm still trying to get all the answers to.

Nathan had homework and had to suffer through lunch before he could do it. (We're really mean to each other in our family.) Daniel didn't have any.

Daniel felt like the day was really long. Nathan didn't.

Nathan now knows how to work the drinking fountain.

Their mom is hoping they fall right to sleep tonight!!!!

Scrapbook page to celebrate the day!

Do you think they'll look that happy on the 1st day of school 7 or 8 years from now?

School Days!

Guess what today is?

THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!!!

I'll bet you can't tell I was looking forward to this. Daniel has been excited, too, but not as much as me!

Here are the kids in our traditional first day of school picture. They look like a cell phone service commercial. We just need one more kid.

The boys got haircuts last night and everyone got a bath. The boys had fun picking out their clothes this morning. We watched them walk to the bus stop and climb on the bus. I couldn't help but wonder how Nathan was feeling about everything.

In our small town, all the kids ride the bus together to the high school and then the younger kids change buses and are driven to their own schools. We don't have neighborhood schools. Instead, we are divided by grades. For us, this meant that Daniel and Nathan got on different buses. I hope Nathan didn't have any trouble finding the right place to go. I assume there were people to help out.? Yesterday, Daniel said to Chad, "There's only one thing troubling me." He was worried about Nathan getting the right bus, too. Isn't that sweet?

The bus comes to our stop at 7:33 AM. An hour later, I had the floors mopped now I'm pooped. I've got to use my time more effectively! Leah's already complaining that I won't let her watch TV. I'm so mean.

The other night we were grocery shopping and Nathan thought it would be funny to eat something he found as we went down the baking aisle. It looked like it had been some kind of flour. He and Daniel thought it was hilarious. Being the perfect mother, I told him not to do that because he had no idea if what he eats is going to make him sick or not. So what do I wake up to that night? Nathan is standing in his room, crying, with a pile of vomit in front of him. And the smell was horrible. He was sick for about an hour and then fine. Is it coincidence or did he really get sick from the mystery flour? I'm not sure, but I let him believe it all his fault (because I am the perfect mother). I don't think he'll be doing that again!

Speaking of perfect. I just want the world to know that I am married to the perfect husband. Thanks for everything, Chad!

How sad am I?

I haven't posted since the 2nd? What's wrong with me?

I have been in the land of living peoples. I have been working on Leah's blanket, finished the blessing afghan, started another baby afghan, made one of my maternity dresses (and wore it two days in a row), getting school supplies together (THEY START ON THURSDAY...YIPEE!!!), cleaning house, doing a little Family History and fighting a higher level of fatigue than I expected.

Today Daniel and Nathan have a dentist appointment. Tomorrow, they have school registration.

I did one scrapbook page. Check out this blog page to see all the pages our little ward group has done so far.

It was a warm one last night. The temp in the room was 81.5 when I turned out the light and a chilly 76 when I got up this morning. Lovely. I thought I was going to sweat all night. I was directly under the fan which was Mach 5.

Rebekah asked me, "Why?" this morning. Oh no, it's finally got her. They all have the WhyBug now.

And now I'm off to clean the bathrooms. Gross.

Whoa! She's out of control

Our digital scrapbooking group had a challenge to create a Top Ten page. Originally, I couldn't think of which person I would focus on so I created the top ten smiles page.

Well, after seeing every one's cute pages, I decided to do one for everyone in the family. As you can see, it got a bit out of control. But they're done! :)

I do have a family and life outside of the hours I've been sitting at the computer. We're still trying to get better around here.

Nathan's fever is gone. Leah complains that her tummy hurts sometimes, but it's hard to tell when the symptoms are real with her. Rebekah's nose is getting better...it's not so fluid.

On the other hand, Daniel still has a fever today. I don't think he had one yesterday. I was glad because he had an appointment with an allergist that we were lucky to get. The next appt. available was at the end of the month.

The good news is that he isn't allergic to any foods. He does have some allergies, which explains his coughing at night (all summer) and his habit to run his palm up the end of his nose. He is allergic to cats, some grasses, tobacco, dust, seasonal mold, and dogs. They didn't test for other animals. He's probably allergic to the rabbits outside as well. They tested for 80 things @ $7.50 a test!!! Let's hope that insurance company pays up. I'm still reeling from the price of a month of Singulair.
Even so, we're having a hard time putting the kittens out of the house. I did bathe them. There is a HEPA filter in the boys' room and their door is shut. There is a second filter downstairs. The Kirby vacuum is supposed to be really good for fighting allergies, but I'm not convinced it's anything more than a sales trick. I guess I'll have to be better about dusting the house. *sigh*
Between the new medicine and being sick, Daniel is very sleepy and not hungry. But, there has been less fighting today! (Every cloud has a silver lining.)

If you like online shopping

There is a terrific jeans sale going on at The Children's Place...ends up to be $7.50 a pair. I got some for the boys for school.

After you select your pants, enter this code as you are checking out for 25% off. FMR77

The shipping is only $5 which makes it even nicer!

Just thought some of you might like to take advantage. :)

It was good while it lasted

Sunday morning I was saying my prayers and expressed gratitude for healthy kids. Less than 48 hours later, two had fevers, one was extremely cranky and sported a fountain for a nose and the 4th was questionable (she's always cranky).

When Nathan gets sick, he puts himself to bed. He also gets a fever much quicker than anyone else. When Daniel gets sick, he curls up in a ball by the toilet. He has an innate fear of throwing up. I was really grateful at 4:30 this morning to know that the toilet and the rug by it were clean as I found Daniel on his knees with his face pressed to the floor.

I did a little scrapbooking yesterday. I did accomplish some other things, but it's hard to remember what exactly. I even had a dr's appt. One of these pages was done as Monday passed into Tuesday. Don't you hate it when you are tired but can't fall asleep?
This is swimming lessons from this summer.

This is Leah's birthday from January.

This is Nathan's birthday from February.

I can catch up with all of 2007's memories without leaving the computer. Hopefully, I won't try it all in one sitting.

Can I do this?

BABYLON, N.Y. (AP) - A peace officer for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals happened across a moving pillowcase on a beach Saturday on which someone had written: "Live Gator - Please find him a home," officials said.
The off-duty officer for the Suffolk County organization had been taking a walk on Long Island's Overlook beach, according to the group. The officer called in a response team to rescue the 30-inch-long animal.
SPCA officials are asking for donations to help them care for the alligator until it can be taken to a sanctuary. They are also seeking information on who might have dumped the gator.

I still have a cat that I need to find a home for. Maybe a dog, too.

Not quite the best mom

I made cookies this afternoon. Date-filled cookies with crispy, buttery dough. Yum. As I'm making these cookies, I'm thinking to myself what a nice mom I am to be making cookies for my children. I must love them so much!

Then I realized that the best mom would actually let the kids help. I can't even list all the ways that isn't desirable. Not only do I avoid that bonding activity, I complained to Daniel that he was breathing on the cookies (and he WAS!).

To top it off, I only let them have one even though they requested more.

So I'm not quite the best mom, but we'll be having homemade date-filled cookies with our gourmet pb&j tomorrow (if Daddy doesn't eat them all first).

New Trends

There are a few things that I really don't enjoy.

Some are not surprising...beastly children, annoying neighbor dogs that bark ALL NIGHT, seeing rising numbers on the bathroom scale, etc.

Then there are the things that some people like that I don't. Green beans (don't even get me started), cleaning house, clothes shopping, etc.

Saturday, I got to remind myself WHY I don't like clothes shopping. I dropped Chad and the three older kids at the movies and took Rebekah with me to the mall to look for maternity dresses for church. I have to assume that people have started betting behind my back which dress I'll be wearing each week. It's probably getting pretty predictable.

There are 4 anchor stores in our mall...JCPenney, Sears, Macys & Dillards. Macys and Dillards don't even have a maternity selection. I couldn't find one in Sears (nor could I find a sales person to ask). JCPenney had one corner (3 racks and some wall displays) devoted to beached whale fashions. No dresses. I stopped into Old Navy to remind myself that they don't have anything nice enough for church. (I realize that this doesn't stop some people, but I do have something against tight screen-printed t-shirts, short, ruffly skirts and flip flops as fitting for Sunday worship.)

So, I'm tired and frustrated, and heading to one last store in the mall. I've avoided it to this point because I expect it to be higher-priced as it is a maternity clothing store. I'm thinking, "Maybe there is a new trend in maternity fashions. It could be anything. Go naked? Don't go (to church) at all? Don't have kids? (Now there is a tempting one at times.) Wear your regular clothes and show off just how large every part of you has become?" In the last store I only found short dresses (you don't want to see above my knees from the front OR the back) in weird patterns and revealing styles.

The sales girl recommended wearing skirts. I get irritated by my slip sliding up higher and higher over my bulges. I really don't want to be tugging on skirts for 3 hours, not to mention the heat factor. I'm pregnant and hormonal and I want to be comfortable...darn it!!!

At this point, I had about 30 minutes before I expected the movie would be over. I slipped into Subway (Our mall doesn't have a food court. It does have a Subway and a PretzelMaker directly across from each other. Maybe you call that a food stop.), grabbed a cup and put some money by the register as I told the kid I was buying a drink. I figured he could ring up a drink when he got done with the 15 people in line (I was too cranky to wait in a sandwich line for a small lemonade.). From there, Rebekah and I headed to Hancock Fabric and bought 2 patterns and 6 yards of fabric.

Incidentally, the maternity selection in the pattern books is incredibly limited, too. Each pattern maker offered 3-5 patterns for maternity clothing...total. Maybe one style of dress per book.

Sheesh!

So, in case I didn't have enough to do around the house, I can make myself some dresses. Maybe I should start my own trend and just wrap up in a blanket (a nice one of course...no screen-print for church).

P.S. This is my 200th blog since starting in October 2005 with a sleeping 6-week-old Rebekah in my arms. She's going to be 2 years old in a month and I have gained at least 5 (ok, maybe 6) faithful readers! We've come a long way, Baby!

Vacation Recovery

We went down to visit cousins on Monday. By the time we arrived at our final destination, the kids had been traveling about 6 hours. You can imagine how glad we ALL were to get out of the van. Luckily, there had been a little break while Chad helped his sister and brother-in-law move a few things from one apartment to the other. The kids got to get a good stretch then. Bedtime was a bit delayed, but not too terribly long.

The next night was the killer. We rode the Heber Creeper to celebrate Pioneer Day. The train left at 8 pm and returned about 10:30. It was a fun trip, but a long time for kids to be contained on a train. We got to eat pizza and drink lemonade until we were sick, so at least we had a diversion. I was near to passing out on the ride back from Heber because I was so tired. Leah was nowhere near passing out. She responded to extreme fatigue by screaming. Real screams. She was complaining that she wanted out of her seat before we'd fully accelerated to highway speeds. I wanted to strangle her. I still recall the blessed moment she finally fell asleep. We drove home the next afternoon and the kids were surprisingly well behaved. Maybe they saw the "light at the end of the tunnel."

The past two mornings, the kids have been sleeping longer than usual. I have enjoyed that!

I was able to spend some time at the Family History Library with my dad while we searched for information on his grandfather. This man has been eluding us for YEARS and all it took was a trip to the International Floor to look into some Swedish records. We now have several more names. It was exciting to make some progress! Now I wish that I lived closer. I would like to spend a few long days scanning microfilmed records.

Here are a couple more digital scrapbook pages. I'm trying to not get too involved in these since they can easily take a couple of hours from my day. There are a few other things that I should be doing.

I am REALLY looking forward to school starting. Nineteen days left. How does one little boy create so much havoc?

Only 25 days of summer to go!

I will be so glad when Daniel goes back to school! It is going to be so quiet around here. It's going to be weird in the morning while Nathan is gone, too. The girls will really become better playmates (or stronger enemies).

While I love my oldest son, most fights involve him and it will be nice to have a break. I can't figure out why he can't leave anyone alone. It's apparently in his blood to be obnoxious. Ninety percent of the time, I can end a fight by yelling his name.

And then the next thing I know, he's helping out in a big way and seeming very mature.

He felt like a big kid during his swimming lessons these past two weeks. He was in Level 3 (no more life jackets for anything). I thought I was getting him caught up to his peers, but there were 4th and 5th graders in his class as well as a 1st grader. I guess I won't worry about Nathan still being in Level 1 next summer as a 6 year old.

Daniel was the shortest kid in his class and the only one the instructors had to "catch and release" since he couldn't touch the bottom on his own. He passed, though. I teased him that he must be the shortest person to ever pass Level 3. He even dove off the diving board for the first time. Here is the clip.

Here are some other shots of Daniel in the pool (or about to be in the pool).
About three weeks ago, we started reading scriptures before bed each night. The kids have been really excited about it (thankfully). We're not doing anything fantastic. We read one verse each, with Nathan and Leah repeating their verses after Chad or I read them aloud for them. Daniel has really likes being able to read by himself. Truthfully, we probably wouldn't have started scriptures at all if he couldn't read.
We also have family prayer before bed (and in the mornings when we remember). Leah usually prays that we won't fight or hit or kick or scream. (A little insight into our emotional states.) Nathan still includes B when he lists family members by name. Rebekah has started to say her prayers by her bed. If she does, it's when someone kneels down by her and tells her what to say. Then she says, "uh" for each part. Funny.
I get to teach in Relief Society again tomorrow. I haven't lost nearly as much sleep this month as I did last month. Am I a veteran already or have I just stopped caring? All the same, it will be nice when it's over.
It has been over 90 degrees most of the month. We've been well above our average. I realize that most of my faithful readers will not feel sorry for me as they have been above 100 several times. But many of you have AC and are not pregnant. I am fondly anticipating September!
We still have one ornery cat to give away. Anyone interested?

Kissing Cousins

Hey everyone, Chad and I discovered that we are related...way back in the mid 1800's.

A 1/2 brother (different wife) of his Great Great Grandfather, Charles Albert Collett, married the sister of my Great Great Great Grandfather, Christiana Rachel Graham.

It's kind of crazy and a bit tangled, but also kind of amusing.

If you're a Collett and want more details, visit the family page.

I obviously have too much time on my hands

My ward has started a Digital Scrapbooking group. Somehow I thought I'd have time to check it out. Because, you know, I can't start too many projects. Maybe this is best. There is no way I'd sit down and scrapbook otherwise. Since I'm already at the computer so much, why not have something else to do while I sit there?

My first page was my "test the waters" page. I was trying out the program and all. So it's not fancy. I could go back and change it, but I'm one of those sentimental people and feel it's important to have something to look back on nostalgically.

The second page was a little easier, though I was still figuring some things out. I really learned to save my work part way through in case of catastrophe. In this case, I accidentally closed my work. Duh! So I made the page twice. It actually looked better the second time.

And after these two pages, Leah is wondering when I'm going to do a page for her. What a little Diva! I'm going to make a page of all her excuses why she can't take a nap!

I took the kids shopping today

If you think I must be crazy, you're probably right. If I didn't start out crazy, the kids made sure I was in a frenzied state of mind by the time we got home. I seriously thought I was going to lose it.

I don't get Nathan. He shows the most genius of all my little geniuses. He has a burning desire to learn and gives it more attention than anyone else. He has a serious selective hearing problem.

Today the kids were in a double holding pattern. They didn't hear me until they heard it double. Nathan's holding pattern is normally double the other kids. So I got to give Nathan a lot of extra attention...most of it negative. Does it bother him? Not that I can see. He just makes his own decisions and sets out to act upon them, mindless of rules, restrictions or rewards.

Is that a side effect of genius?

And then I saw him with his thumb in his mouth at bedtime. He must be trying out new hobbies. Right?

Ugh. I can't decide if Rebekah is sharing unusual amounts of "Nathan DNA", or if she's just 22 months old. She's done pretty well in her toddler bed. Doesn't get out at night. Has a harder time falling asleep. I've found her on her dresser a couple of times and one minute after returning her to bed with a swat this afternoon, found her in a pile of shoes playing dress up. I dropped her in her crib and she was asleep in 5 minutes.

Daniel has a hard time stopping. Whatever he's doing, he has to do it another time or two AFTER he's been told to stop. Whether babbling, spinning his plate, poking someone, etc, his brain is in the slow lane sending the messages to the offending body parts. That's when I have to put my brain in the passing lane to keep my hands from circling his neck!

And Leah? If I'm going to be crabby about my kids, I should be fair and attack them all. Leah can go from angel to screaming in 2.6 seconds. She screams if her shirt won't come off, she screams if it won't go on. She screams if she can't open something or if she can't close it. She screams if Daniel looks at her or Nathan won't share. And you should hear her every afternoon about 11:30 when we have the daily battle: nap time.

OK. My kids do have redeeming qualities. Maybe you are even familiar with some of them. Hold that thought because I'm too grumpy to hand out compliments. And now I have to go upstairs and growl at someone who is out of bed.
