Passed out

There is something so sweet about babies who have just finished nursing and are limp and drooling creamy white milk from the corner of their mouths. It's like they've been fed a sleep tonic. They can't keep their eyes open and their warm bodies fit so perfectly in the bend of your arm, held up against your heart.

It moments like these that I stare endlessly at Sarah and cannot picture her giving me any trouble...EVER. But I'm not so naive. She's number six, after all. So I give her slow, gentle kisses on her cheek, temple and forehead and put her into bed. You don't fool me kid!

It's Already Started

My baby will have her first birthday in less than three weeks! It's our family's last first birthday. I am a sentimental person (though I try to hide it behind a grumpy act) and when I know I'm experiencing something for the last time, my mind slows down and tries to absorb it.

And despite my best efforts, I feel like I haven't absorbed enough of Sarah's first year. How can there only be 3 weeks of it left? How does 11 months compress into such a tiny moment in time? How can I get it back? (Please...not through another pregnancy.) I am trying to accept the fact that my turn for that is over and I'm on to other priceless moments. (To that I say, THANK GOODNESS! and SO SOON? all at the same time.)

Anyway, the reason for this emotional post is that I sat behind a little family in Sacrament Meeting today that reminded me of us about 6 1/2 years ago. They have 2 little boys and a teeny tiny baby girl. I just looked at that tiny baby and watch her eyes focus on heavenly images, a smile at the corners of her mouth and her tongue slowly rolling in and out of her miniature mouth. She was so peaceful. And her (likely exhausted) Daddy held her in his arms as his eyes fought for the nap he so badly wanted.

Then I understood. No wonder everyone always wanted to hold our little babies! I mean, I "understood" then, but this time I FELT it myself! I wanted to hold that baby...just for a tiny moment. While I did, I would remember my own babies and the peace they brought (talk about the calm before the storm!). And while I felt the tugging at my heart, I felt Sarah's tugging at my arm; that gigantic baby that's turning one in 3 weeks - she's gone from "straight from heaven" to "get me a straight jacket!"

And one day soon I'll be borrowing a newborn in church. After I can get my bundle of joy into Nursery!

Toothless

I was just admiring Sarah's irresistible toothless grin. Even the ugliest baby is cute when they flash their pink gums. Am I wrong?

So then I wondered why it only works for babies. Anyone ever think their grandma was cute and irresistible when she flashed her gums at them? Somewhere along the path, it loses major charm.

I don't think it's the fat cheeks that does it. I've seen fat toothless old folks. Not even close to the same.

I have nothing against our mature friends and family members who are toothless. I just wonder why I have no urge to pinch their cheeks and tickle their toes when they flash me a smile.

Mustard Yellow

I wish baby underwear came in standard mustard yellow color. It really would be better all around.

As this is not the situation here, I think I may check into dieing/tie dieing these little items. My sister did this with her stained baby underwear. It definitely should have a bit of a mustard yellow undertone...especially in that spot that hits the baby just above the diaper line.

Running out of time

As I mentioned yesterday, my baby is three months old. The older she gets, the less time I have left to sit and cuddle. Three months of the best cuddle time are already gone.

I was sitting in the rocking chair this morning with Sarah asleep on my chest. Her soft, warm little body was completely relaxed and fit perfectly against me. It was so peaceful. However, I was mentally going through a list of why I should get up and get busy.

I have cookies to bake, lights to put on a tree, more laundry to do, a Christmas letter to write, calendars to make, a really long list of sewing, phone calls that have been put off too long, a shower to take, and I need to go to the bathroom.

At one point, I made a move to get up and then sank back into the chair. The jobs would not be affected by another 10 minutes of blissful rocking. (But eventually, that bathroom thing got me up.)

It feels like this is the worst time for Christmas to be looming. I am running out of time with my baby! This is my last chance to hold MY baby. Any baby after this will probably still be cute and soft and warm, but it won't be mine. If I'm blessed enough, I'll have grandkids, but I fully expect that bond to be different...and they won't be MINE.

When Joseph was a baby, I knew I was getting close to the end. I began to understand why youngest kids are spoiled. It's not because the parents are tired and don't care anymore, though that certainly happens. It's because the parents realize that the baby years are beginning to slip from their grasps and they are trying a little harder to hold on to them. That's why the 5-year-old is sitting on Mommy's lap during church, even though they are way past old enough to sit on the bench. (Learn it from me now, all you young parents - and quit judging those families for being bad parents. Your time is coming!)

And while I want Daniel to grow up and act older than he really is, I'm hoping Sarah will stay small a little longer and be my sweet baby. (It's so hard to believe that something so small and innocent is going to have me pulling my hair out in less than two years. How is that possible?) It's no wonder my kids are so confused; their mother is living in two worlds!

So, is there any way to push Christmas back a little longer (like a year), so I can cuddle my little one and still get my long list done in time?

I didn't know they had their eyes open!

We went to the hospital tonight and toured the Labor and Delivery wing. It was the last time we'll take this tour, in preparation of a new baby.

All the kids were very attentive and found different things to be interesting. They really watched as the hospital bed went up and down. They thought the warming bed for the baby was neat. They were surprised to learn that babies are purple when they are born. They got to feel oxygen blowing through the mask.

We saw a very chubby, hairy, pink baby. Leah was quite surprised to see the baby's eyes open already. Now she knows one more difference between people babies and cat babies!

Scrapped Babies

I put this page together while I tried to stay awake during nap time. It's a goal to get Rebekah to put the stinky in the potty today. She usually ends up stinky during nap time, so I was trying to stay ahead in the game. Instead, she fell asleep and I ended up extra tired!

I made this page because I get so many comments on how much the kids look alike. Here is a comparison. They are each one month old. The last frame is reserved so I don't have to remake the page later. But this is NOT an announcement. I am NOT pregnant!
