Out of control

That's how I've felt lately. Things keep happening that make me do things that I didn't plan on doing. And I've had to drive Daniel to the TMJ doctor 3 times in 9 days. We were there for over an hour and a half today. It's 35 minutes one way, add in checking Daniel out of school (and back in again) and putting 3 other kids in the car. Maybe we should move down there.

I have most of Christmas ready to go, but there are 3 major projects I need to do (start, really). And I haven't been able to make goodies for neighbors. Every time I think I'm going to get a chance to tackle a task, something comes up.

And because I don't have time to do the things I need to do, I don't get time to do a lot of the things I like to do...like blog.

But that is one more major project on my mind. I have to catch up the rest of the year before the year ends so that I can send it in for printing! Ugh. Did I mention school is out all next week? I have one more day of only 3 kids at home. Oh yeah, Daniel is getting two teeth pulled tomorrow afternoon.

So, poor me? or poor him? I'm still hoping to enjoy the last few days before Christmas!

Daniel's Trial

Daniel has been having a lot of pain in his jaw again. I feel so sorry for him.

We got him into the doctor yesterday with 3 hour's notice and they "unlocked" him then adjusted him. (That will be a nice bill.) He was still hurting at bedtime (and crying a lot) and this morning. He has an orthodontic appointment this afternoon. I'm sure that won't help. He's been instructed to wear his night time guard continuously until his appointment today. He wasn't excited about that.

I wish I really knew how to help this kid! I wish I could go back two years and take care of those crooked teeth when it was first suggested to us. Who knew it would lead to this?

Leah's teeth are behaving the same way that Daniel's started out. We'll have to be very vigilant!

One heck of a day

We survived the day. Barely. A HUGE thank you to Chad's parents who saw a need and did something to fill it.

They drove 5 hours round trip to watch the sick kids so I could take Daniel to the TMJ doctor and have him fixed up. Things got a little tricky when I noticed that Daniel was also becoming sick, but the appointment was already scheduled and grandma and grandpa were on the road.

It took a lot of coaxing to get Daniel into the van and he waited somewhat patiently for them to be ready for them. I went into the office by myself when we got there and explained that Daniel was sick, but we really hoped they would still see him and help him out. We waited by an outside door so we didn't spread whatever he had all over the waiting room.

He spent about 10 minutes in the chair and we were on our way back home. Luckily, there was road construction on the interstate (did I say luckily?), so I took the highway. It made it a lot easier to pull over when Daniel started throwing up. YUCK.

I spent all morning cleaning...wiping down door handles and light switches, sweeping and mopping, doing tons of laundry, vacuuming, cleaning the bathroom vanity with a bleach cleaner...blah, blah, blah. I hope I got some of those nasty germs!

Chad and I are the only ones who haven't gotten sick. Since Chad got Rebekah's throw up on his face this morning, he'll be very lucky to avoid it. Nathan spent most of the day in one little chair, and Leah in another. Daniel was a little more nomadic. Rebekah tried to feel better throughout the day but would often crash when she overdid it.

Let's hope tomorrow brings a happier day for everyone. And no more fevers!

Someone HELP!

We had a busy weekend. Apparently, it also involved harboring a very nasty germ. Now it's Rebekah's turn to throw up and she's taken it very seriously. Leah is complaining of a headache, but so far seems to be holding off.

Joseph and Sarah don't seem very bad anymore. That sounds like it would be a good thing, but I'm not sure. They sleep more when they're sick. Now they're more likely to seeking me out.

Daniel has been having jaw pain for almost 24 hours. If I'm going to get him to the doctor, it has to be today; I don't think their office is open on Fridays. It would have to be an emergency for me to agree to put Rebekah in the van.

It's not even 8 AM and I have a 2nd load of laundry running...more to come. Several rooms in the house are disaster zones. I can't avoid them any longer. And Sarah just woke up.

Chad just took 4 days off of work. I hate to have him come home today, but I may not have a choice if I am going to take Daniel to the TMJ doctor.

These are the days that I could use two of me...and maybe a 3rd Me to get the sleep the other 2 me's aren't going to get.

A sample of the morning: I was finishing up in the bathroom (brushed my teeth) and Rebekah showed up in the doorway wearing a pale yellow complexion. Within seconds, she was standing over the toilet throwing up for at least the 3rd time in as many hours. I thought it was probably time to wash her hair. I got her kneeling at the tub and was about to start the water when I hear Joseph start screaming and crying in the dining room. He had just started his breakfast when the cat jumped up in the window and scared him half to death! It was so funny, I couldn't help chuckling. I opened the curtains wider so the cat wouldn't be so sneaky next time, but Joseph was spooked enough that I had to go to the back door and dump out cat food to get the cat away from the window. Rebekah did eventually get clean hair. :)

And last, but certainly not least, Nathan just came down the stairs - limping. He says his leg hurts. Let's hope he just slept on it funny.

Brace Face

My nine-year-old will have braces before Christmas! He had two teeth pulled yesterday to make room for the work they will need to do with the braces. Poor kid.

As it is, he's back to drinking motrin and tylenol while we battle the pain from the TMJ, which is exacerbated by the bad bite he has...hence the braces.

I thought the bill from the TMJ doctor was pricey. We could fund the next 5-6 Christmases, nicely, with what it's going to cost to fix his teeth. And it's only the top half. We're getting a nice collection of bills here. I kind of wonder what will be next.

Anyone want to hire me? I'm good for nothing and complain a lot, but I'll work really hard to drive the paycheck to the bank (unless you do direct deposit).

Stay tuned for pictures near the end of the month!

Thanksgiving

I haven't mentioned our Thanksgiving yet. It's not because we didn't have one, but because I didn't think I had that much time to sit at the computer! I'm not sure I have it now, but I did get the pictures loaded, so we'll see how fast I can type. Sarah wants attention, the Christmas bins are all over the living room, Chad leaves work in 15 minutes and dinner (soup) isn't started.

We visited family in Utah for Thanksgiving. We stayed at my mom's house one last time before she moves (again) to the house that I lived in from 16 years old until I got married.

Dinner was at a sister's house - a 50 min +/- drive from my mom's. The kids were glad to get out of the car. We were there for 6 hours. It was nice to visit with my youngest sister and her tough-looking-but-friendly husband. Too bad we didn't get to spend more time with Amber and Cody. We enjoy playing games with them. It was a wake-up call to see my little brother. He's getting old! (No offense, Aaron.) And if he's getting old, I'm getting old; a fact that has become a bigger reality to me this year. I think Aaron may always be a 16-year-old boy in my mind, since that's about the time I left on my mission. My sister, Andrea, and her husband hosted and put a lot of work into preparing and recovering from the 30+ people in their home. I saw my Aunt Bonnie for the first time in several years. I think she's got a magic potion because she doesn't seem to have aged since I last saw her! I also met her husband, Eric; a very pleasant fellow!

Here are some of the men in my family. Crazy...all of them!

The day after Thanksgiving, I spent much of the day with my mom...cleaning up her house to move back into and doing a little light shopping. While we were gone (with Sarah, of course), Chad took the kids on a hike. It was a bit cold, but I think they had fun.

They are such great looking kids!

And possibly needing a little therapy.

That night, I asked my mom if she'd be willing to watch the kids (all 6) for a little while so Chad and I could get out. I was feeling a little guilty for abandoning him all day with no one to visit with or anything to do. While we were gone, the kids got to make cards with Grandma. I think they had fun!

The next morning (about 8 AM), Chad took Daniel, Nathan and Leah back to the hiking trail to see if they could get farther without the littler ones. They'd heard there was a waterfall and wanted to see if they could find it. That's some cold hiking! They saw lots of ice, snow and mud, but Leah had to go to the bathroom before they got to the waterfall. It was probably OK since the trail was getting more difficult and they weren't really prepared for hiking.

I love this picture of Daniel helping Leah up the slippery trail!

Nathan suddenly became interested in leaves this trip.

When we got home, we noticed a wet spot in the bathroom carpet. Ugh. Chad took the back part of the wall off in the bathroom and found the problem(s). That leak has been at it for at least 2 weeks. And it of course couldn't be an easy fix...the parts are old enough to be hard to find. We are now considering replacing the whole tub and re-doing the surround. Merry Christmas, house!

Here is Chad's temporary fix after breaking into the wall. That board was first used under my daybed mattress when I was a kid. We've used it for many things over the years, but never as part of the wall! It's held up by packing tape. Anyone else have something they'd like Chad to come over and work on? He's really quite handy!

And look at my Sweet Sarah. She really likes those animals dangling above her. Here, she is talking to them. :)

In other news, Daniel's jaw has started hurting again. We made it a month. But it was a great month! He'll see the DR on Friday. He also has an orthodontist appointment next month. That will be fun.

Down in the dumps

There are few things in the world of mothering that are more tiring than have sick kids. Having YOUNG sick kids is worse.

Joseph is not feeling well and his nose is constantly oozing. The only thing I can't do while wiping his nose is take a shower. I think I've done everything else. He comes up to me, pointing to his nose, saying, "uh, uh." And the coughing is getting Sarah sick. I can hear her nose start to fill up. Great. I just started getting her to sleep in the bassinet again. I expect we'll be back in the swing before the new week begins.

Normally, this would be challenging enough. But I'm running on reduced sleep rations and really only want to get a nice, uninterrupted nap. The night before last, I didn't see the clock during the 11 pm, 3 am and 5 am hours (Joseph came in crying at 6:00). I saw it every other time. Last night wasn't quite as bad...I only woke 3 times before I really had to get out of bed.

Such sporadic sleep opens the door for really interesting dreams. Two nights ago, I dreamt the entire plot for a mystery novel. I was sure I could remember it, and was recalling it during one feeding time. But once the sun came up, it was gone. A literary wonder the world will never know.

So now that I'm so tired (physically and emotionally), I have no desire to clean the house. This is unfortunate, because things are piling up around here. No one else seems to care, so things get worse and my guilt meter rises.

And getting my kids to care requires serious bribing/threatening. That's tiring, too! We didn't get to have prayer this morning because the boys couldn't move their incredibly lazy rear ends fast enough. Daniel ran onto the bus with his coat, backpack and scout shirt in his hands. Grr.. Sometimes I just want to squeeze that boy! More guilt.

Daniel has a TMJ check-up today. I'm taking everyone but Nathan with me (since he'll still be in school) for a 35 min drive on the freeway, each way, because I didn't know who to call to come sit in my house for two hours and didn't want to burden anyone with a sick and cranky Joseph. I guess we'll sit in the van and watch a movie or something while I send Daniel in. Maybe I can get the doctor to talk to me at the back door so I can stay in the parking lot with the kids? Are things supposed to get this tricky?

I got the bill for taking Rebekah to the Dr. to pull the cactus needles...$183. Wow. He's thinking he's a little more skilled with those tweezers than I observed! We'd better make sure to use the free ice cream coupons he gave us. I want to get my money's worth!

And so when the FOP called this morning (Fraternal Order of Police) I hung up on them. That was free.

Now, between feeling sorry for myself and just being in a sorry state, it's a regular fun-fest around here! Woo hoo!

Catching Up in 20

Wow. My days are busier than they used to be. Things have been happening in my tiny little world, but I haven't had time to share many of them. I do spend a lot of time at the computer, but it's usually while holding (and usually nursing) Sarah, so I only have one hand to use and that means slow typing. I'm taking a moment now to play catch up. I'll list 20 things that have happened, but leave out the details. If you want to hear an extended version of the story, just leave a comment and mention which numbers in the list you're interested in. That way, I won't bore everyone telling them how much fun I had cutting my toenails (that isn't and never was one of the twenty things).

1. I got a hair cut and perm.
2. Daniel doesn't complain of jaw pain anymore. The TMJ treatment seems to be working. We have a follow-up appointment on Thursday. Still need to figure out who's going to watch 3 of my kids!
3. We brought one of the kittens inside to be house cat and mouser. He only lasted about 4 days. Hope the mouse traps can do the job. Who knew a cat would forget he was litter box trained?
4. We went letterboxing for the first time in over 3 years. The kids had a blast.
5. Rebekah landed on a cactus plant while rushing towards a letterbox hiding spot and got a palm full of cactus needles. It took a trip to the doctor to get all the hairlike prickles out. She still talks about it.
6. Sarah now weighs 11 and 1/2 pounds! Way to grow!
7. We've avoided Swine Flu, but do like to get sick. Daniel and Nathan have had a "Saturday Night Fever" with cough, but on different Saturdays. Now Joseph has it. His is MonDAY Fever.
8. We went to a Straw Bale maze earlier in October. It was a lot of fun and Daniel threw a fit when we left.
9. I've started indexing records for the FamilySearch program. Some people have really bad handwriting. So far, I've done over 1400 names (thanks to nursing Sarah)...since 18 October.
10. We carved Halloween pumpkins. Two were Chernobyl pumpkins.
11. We got some great pictures of the kids in the leaves. These are just a few. Sadly, the leaves are still on the lawn - the piles are somewhat scattered.
12. The kids got to parade around the school in their Halloween costumes. I got to take 3 kids to the school twice that day and run around helping kids get costumes finalized. I miss Chad's flexible work schedule!
13. Choir practices have resumed. I really feel like an idiot in there sometimes. I can't get over feeling inadequate and therefore keep saying really dumb things. And of course, I keep telling myself that the choir would rather have someone else lead them. If you could even call it that. I have some issues to work through (obviously).
14. I've made so many squash recipes this last month that my kids will probably not eat squash the rest of their lives.
15. Our ward Halloween party was last week. The kids had a lot of fun dressing up for that (in addition to the school event) and for trick-or-treating the next night. I'm so glad Halloween is over.
16. My first week of weight loss ended in a gain. (There was a loss at first, but I found it again in the sugar cookies I made last Monday.)
17. Sarah does not like chocolate milk. Or should I say, she doesn't like chocolate in her milk?
18. The kids had a day off from school last week when the wind storm knocked out power to the middle school. The whole district was out for the day, though the power came back on.
19. I have been creating lots of digital scrapbook pages lately. Maybe I should update the slide show on the blog.
20. Two friends and I are singing in church next week. I don't get nervous in practices.

OK...that was a little difficult to think of so many things. And now you're probably glad I didn't go into too many details.

Here's a cute shot of Joseph on the afternoon we went letterboxing. He saw me taking his picture and stopped his climb down the steps to pose. He's so fun to take pictures of!
